Archive: The Colombo Plan

After the departure of the EIC and Crown, taking 9.2 trillion GBP from the Indus subcontinent, leaving behind the newly partitioned India and Pakistan, came the introduction of the Colombo Plan in 1950. ⠀ ⠀

“Colombo Plan was the first organized attempt to enroll Southeast Asia in the Cold War project of Western globalisation.” ⠀ ⠀

“the programme would be designed to both strengthen the economies of the countries in the area to help combat the spread of communism”. - Lester B Pearson (Canadian Minister for External Affairs)⠀ ⠀

The alternative was the communist economic assistance program called Comecon which originated from the Soviet Union. ⠀ ⠀

The Colombo Plan was an attempt to rebuild international financial systems through the creation of of various new institutions and programmes. Headed by America, Canada and with the assistance of Australia, all funded by Financial Institutions and executed by Corporations. ⠀ ⠀

Out of which the ‘Green Revolution’ was born in Punjab and India creating dependency on the western capitalist structures of - States, Financial Institutions and Corporations.
